A Man Shot Dead Near RNC Venue in Milwaukee

Officers from the Columbus Police Department, Ohio, fatally shot a man on Tuesday afternoon near 14th and Vliet streets in Milwaukee, roughly a mile from the main RNC venue, Fiserv Forum. According to witnesses, two homeless men were involved in a fight in King Park. One of them reportedly produced a knife, prompting a heavy police response, resulting in the man being shot. Official police confirmation of these events is pending.

Heavy Police and Secret Service Presence

The incident drew a large police presence, including Secret Service agents. Beloit police also contributed to securing the park. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office arrived on scene at 2:50 p.m. The Columbus Fraternal Order of Police released a statement revealing that no officers were injured in the event.

Law Enforcement Boost for RNC

Police from 63 departments across 24 states, Washington, D.C., and 44 Wisconsin agencies are in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention this week. WISN 12 News Political Director Matt Smith discussed the situation with Mayor Cavalier Johnson at the RNC, relaying that the incident seemed unrelated to the RNC and occurred outside the security zone.

RNC Day’s Theme – “Make America Safe Once Again”

The day of the incident had the theme of “Make America Safe Once Again” at the RNC. Although the event took place in the outer perimeter of the RNC within the operational zone of the assigned officers, the Columbus Police stressed in a statement that the incident was not related to the convention. The police line was expanded to 17th and Vliet streets, according to WISN 12 News. The investigation of the shooting is ongoing, led by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team.
