Mangione Charged with Several Offences
Mangione, 26, now faces charges such as forgery, unlicensed firearm possession, tampering with identification records, possessing crime instruments and providing false identification to law enforcement. Altoona police were alerted to his presence at a McDonald’s thanks to a tip-off about a person fitting the description of Thompson’s suspected killer.
How Mangione was Identified
Once on the scene, police claim they instantly recognized Mangione from New York police’s photos. After he falsified his identity using a New Jersey driver’s license, and subsequently disclosed his actual identity, he was taken into custody.
Evidence Found in Mangione’s Backpack
Subsequent to his arrest, a search of Mangione’s backpack revealed a 3D-printed pistol and silencer. The gun, with a metal slide, plastic handle, metal threaded barrel, and a loaded Glock magazine, with an additional loose nine-millimeter hollow point round, prompted further investigation.
Mangione in Connection with UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Murder
Authorities discovered a three-page handwritten document in Mangione’s possession during their search. NYPD Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny, indicated that the document made no specific threats but expressed animosity towards corporate America. NYPD are currently questioning Mangione regarding Thompson’s murder. Altoona police, located two hours from Pittsburgh, are collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies on the case.
Mangione has been ordered to be held without bail, according to reports.
