TL/DR –

The Marquette Area Public Schools Board (MAPS) is in the process of deciding on a new nickname for their school, having received nearly 2,000 suggestions from an online survey. The number of suggestions has been narrowed down to 350, with each of 44 student advisories set to vote on eight choices. The board is aiming to have a decision made before Christmas break, while also emphasizing the importance of protecting students from potential backlash over the chosen nickname.

MAPS Board Discusses Publicly Suggested Nicknames at Special Meeting

The Marquette Area Public Schools Board (MAPS) held a special meeting to discuss public-suggested nicknames for Marquette Senior High School. The board reviewed almost 2,000 nickname suggestions obtained from an online survey held last month.

Reduction of Nickname Suggestions

Board President Kristen Cambensy reported that the suggestions have been condensed to about 350 via a board-conducted survey. Cambensy explained that the board ranked the names based on the likelihood of selection.

Student Advisory Involvement in Nickname Selection

These nicknames will be divided among 44 student advisories. Every advisory will vote on eight nicknames until a single nickname per advisory remains. This approach aims to involve students without exposing them to potential backlash.

Concerns for Student Protection

The board is committed to the protection of students throughout the rebranding process. “We are all unified, from the beginning, that we’re going to do whatever we can to keep them from being targeted,” stated board Member Jennifer Klipp.

Board’s Responsibility in Rebranding

Cambensy echoed Klipp’s concern, emphasizing the board’s responsibility since deciding to remove the name. She also recognized the importance of student input in the selection process.

Timeline for Nickname Selection

MAPS Board anticipates receiving the 44 selected nicknames from student advisories before the Christmas Break on Dec. 21. A regular monthly meeting is scheduled for Dec. 18.
