The Public Health Institute (PHI) has announced Melissa Stafford Jones, MPH, as its new Chief Executive Officer and President. PHI’s Board selected Stafford Jones after an exhaustive nationwide search, considering her extensive, lifelong dedication to health advancement, her team-focused leadership, and her past experience with policy and healthcare initiatives.

Dara Treseder, the chair of PHI’s Board, praised Stafford Jones as a “visionary leader” with a proven record in handling complex public health issues. The Board strongly believes in her ability to drive PHI forward, creating lasting positive impacts on public health.

Stafford Jones brings over three decades of expertise in health policy matters at local, state, and national levels. In her role as director of the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative at the California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS), she made substantial contributions to California’s children and youth behavioral health system. She also served as a federal appointee in the Obama Administration for HHS Region IX, where she played a key role in implementing the Affordable Care Act among other initiatives.

Her appointment coincides with the 60th anniversary of PHI. As one of the nation’s largest non-governmental public health bodies, PHI builds healthier communities worldwide. It runs over 60 programs in more than twenty countries, with an annual portfolio exceeding $200 million.
