TL/DR –

Mississippi Republican Party Chairman, Frank Bordeaux, has announced he will not seek re-election and endorsed former U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst as his successor. Bordeaux cited his successful tenure and the need for a “new leader with a fresh perspective” as reasons for his decision. Hurst received the support of Republican Governor, Tate Reeves, who traditionally chooses the new chairman, and has a history of involvement in state and national Republican politics, including serving as a U.S. attorney under the Trump administration.

Mississippi Republican Chair Frank Bordeaux Steps Down, Endorses Mike Hurst

Frank Bordeaux, Chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party, declared on Wednesday that he would be stepping down from his role. Bordeaux endorsed former U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst as his successor.

An insurance mogul, Bordeaux stated on Facebook that it was time to hand over the reins to a “new leader with a fresh perspective” after a fulfilling stint as the party’s chairman. According to Bordeaux, the party has seen unprecedented success during his tenure, electing more Republicans to local, state, and federal offices than ever before.

In the 2020 gubernatorial race, Republican Governor Tate Reeves had supported Bordeaux to replace the former GOP Chairman Lucien Smith. This move likely played a crucial role in bolstering political support for the governor in Coast during the 2023 statewide election. The selection of a GOP chairman typically falls under the jurisdiction of the incumbent Republican governor, who then hands over the choice to the executive committee for installation.

Though there has been no immediate statement from Reeves following Bordeaux’s announcement, Hurst has indicated that he is backed by the governor. Hurst expressed gratitude towards Reeves for his support and commended Bordeaux for his exceptional leadership and the advancements made to the party and conservative principles during his tenure.

Mike Hurst: A Strong Contender for the Next GOP Chairman

“If elected as the chairman, I hope to play a role in brightening Mississippi’s future and enhancing our state and party,” Hurst stated optimistically.

In response to the announcement, Republican Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann lauded Frank Bordeaux’s leadership, stating that his efforts were instrumental in bringing unity, success, and organization to the Republican Party across the state during the pandemic and the recent statewide election.

Mike Hurst has been a key player in Mississippi’s Republican politics. He is currently a partner in the Phelps Dunbar law firm’s Jackson office and served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi under President Donald Trump’s administration from 2017 to 2021. He is also the founder and former director of the Mississippi Justice Institute, a division of the Mississippi Center for Public Policy.

Hurst’s wife, Celeste Hurst, was elected last year to represent the state House District 77, covering Madison, Rankin, and Scott counties.
