Minneapolis Officer Killed in Shooting He Responded To

On Thursday, a Minneapolis police officer, Jamal Mitchell, was killed in what authorities are calling an ambush while responding to a shooting call and providing medical aid. The suspected shooter and another individual were also killed, and a third person was left critically injured in a south Minneapolis neighborhood. A second officer and a firefighter were also injured during the incident.

Officer Mitchell was a father and was engaged to be married. Upon his death, fellow police officers formed a line outside Hennepin County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

“The city of Minneapolis lost a hero in police officer Jamal Mitchell,” stated Mayor Jacob Frey. “This officer gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect and save the lives of others. His life, his service, and his name will forever be remembered in the city of Minneapolis.”

Mitchell was previously recognized for his heroic actions during just his third day on the job last year. The Minneapolis Police Department credited him and another officer with rescuing an elderly couple from a house fire. The officers managed to evacuate the couple before the home was fully engulfed in flames.

“Their quick actions … were truly heroic, as they prevented this fire from being even more tragic,” stated Chief Brian O’Hara in a post.

This tragic event follows a similar incident three months ago when two officers and a firefighter-paramedic were killed while responding to a domestic violence call in the Minneapolis suburb of Burnsville. In that incident, a man began shooting from a home with seven children inside. A third officer was injured before the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
