Investigating Multistate Salmonella Outbreak Connected to August Egg Company
The CDC, FDA, and several state officials are collecting various data types to examine a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis. Investigations indicate a potential source of contamination could be eggs distributed by August Egg Company.
Epidemiologic Data and Reporting Delays
By June 5, 2025, 79 cases of the Salmonella outbreak have been reported from 7 states, with six individuals reporting travel to California or Nevada before falling ill. Illnesses started between February 24 and May 17, 2025. Out of the 61 people with available information, 21 have needed hospitalization, but no deaths have been reported. However, as reporting takes 3 to 4 weeks, the actual number of cases may be higher.
Role of Public Health Officials
Public health officials collect various data from impacted individuals to identify the outbreak’s source. Most interviewees reported consuming eggs in the week before falling sick. Additionally, two restaurants serving eggs are linked to illness sub-clusters.
Laboratory and Traceback Data
PulseNet data indicates that the outbreak’s illnesses may be related. Bacteria from patients’ samples showed close genetic similarity, suggesting a common food source. After an inspection at the August Egg Company, samples tested positive for Salmonella.Enteritidis, showing a close genetic relationship with bacteria from patients’ samples.
The WGS analysis revealed bacteria resistance to nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin, with one person’s sample showing additional resistance to ampicillin and streptomycin. More information is available at the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS).
Public Health Actions
The FDA found August Egg Company to be a common egg supplier among the affected individuals. As a result, the company recalled eggs on June 6, 2025, with CDC recommending the public to avoid consuming, selling, or serving these recalled eggs.
