New York Police Release Image of Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Murder
TL/DR –
The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, was shot and killed in Manhattan, and the New York Police Department has released new images of the suspect. They are scouring a vast network of surveillance cameras and have brought in drones, dogs, and analyzed data related to electric bikes, as the suspect fled on an e-bike. As they continue their investigation, authorities found a cell phone, video footage of the suspect, bullet shell casings, a fingerprint on a water bottle, and identified the words “deny”, “defend” and “depose” associated with the case, which may hint at a motive related to criticism of the insurance industry.
Manhunt Underway for Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder
New York Police Department (NYPD) has released a clear image of a man suspected of shooting and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson. The image, captured by security cameras at a Manhattan hostel believed to be the suspect’s temporary residence, shows the man’s face unmasked for the first time.
As of Thursday, the suspect remains at large. Law enforcement is utilizing drones, dogs, and a vast network of private and public surveillance cameras to aid in the search. The NYPD is also examining data related to electric bikes.
Confirmed details about the vehicle used in the crime remain scarce. Despite initial references to a city-owned e-bike, The New York Times reports it may have been an unmarked electric bike.
A number of items left at the crime scene, including a cell phone and shell casings engraved with the words “deny”, “defend” and “depose”, are being examined for clues. These words also appear in a book criticizing the US health insurance industry, titled ‘Delay Deny Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It’.
CNN reports that police found a fingerprint on objects connected to the suspect and are examining them to ascertain an identity. NYC Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the murder does not seem random and appears to be a premeditated attack.
Brian Thompson was shot multiple times in the back and calf early Wednesday morning outside a Manhattan Hilton hotel. The masked suspect, carrying a gray backpack, fled the scene on an e-bike. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
Thompson’s widow, Paulette Thompson, confirmed to NBC News that her husband had received threats. UnitedHealthcare, the company Thompson led, insures tens of millions of citizens, making it one of the country’s largest companies.
The high-profile murder has instigated a review of security procedures amongst corporate heads. Axios reports comments from security executives expressing surprise that Thompson was not accompanied by a protective detail.
Thompson leaves behind his wife, Paulette, and two sons.
