Dr. Anne Dahlman, seasoned education professional with 27 years of experience, will be Northern Michigan University’s next provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, starting April 1. Dahlman, a Finland native, previously served as interim associate provost at Minnesota State University Mankato, achieving significant career progress in the past 17 years.
Dahlman expressed her excitement for her upcoming role at Northern Michigan University, emphasizing the institution’s reputation for excellent faculty and academic programs. She aims to create unparalleled educational opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds and envisions the university as a beacon of academic excellence among regional universities.
NMU President Brock Tessman praised Dahlman for her blend of instructional, research and administrative experience. He highlighted her unique energy, creativity and vision that will tremendously contribute to their leadership team, and Academic Affairs in particular.
Dahlman boasts an impressive educational background, having earned her first master’s degree in Swedish/German education from the University of Joensuu in Finland, followed by master’s degrees in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and German from Colorado State University. She achieved her doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Minnesota in 2005.
During her tenure at Minnesota State University Mankato, Dahlman managed a strategic resource budget of $112 million and led Academic Affairs’ strategic planning efforts. This included launching a new School of Applied Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, which houses the university’s top agricultural degree programs.
She also spearheaded a strategic partnership between MSU and Mayo Clinic System, focusing on regional needs such as rural mental health, food insecurity and equitable access to health care. Additionally, Dahlman played a major role in achieving a national ranking of 8th among master’s institutions in terms of international student numbers in 2022, and led the creation of 20 new international partnerships.
Dahlman has also served as Honors Program director at MSU, contributing to the program’s increased diversity and size. She excelled as a tenured faculty member and was promoted to full professor in the Department of Educational Studies: K-12 and Secondary Programs. She previously held teaching positions in institutions in Wisconsin, Finland, Colorado and Wyoming. Outside of her academic pursuits, Dahlman enjoys fitness, continuous learning, and spending time with her family and pets.
