Ohio Woman Sues Hospital for Allegedly Amputating Wrong Leg
TL/DR –
An Ohio woman named Sharon Jacks is suing Selby general hospital after her left leg was wrongly amputated during a scheduled operation for her right leg, consequently resulting in her becoming a double amputee. Jacks and her husband have named nine defendants in the lawsuit, accusing them of gross negligence, battery, and reckless conduct, with the complaint alleging that the defendants acted with conscious disregard for the certainty of catastrophic injury. The hospital admitted that the incident was avoidable and that expected operating room procedures were not followed, with those involved held accountable for their actions and no longer in their positions.
An Ohio Woman Suing Hospital Over Wrong Leg Amputation
An Ohio woman has filed a lawsuit against a hospital for amputating the wrong leg during a scheduled procedure. Sharon Jacks, 74, allegedly underwent a left leg amputation instead of the planned right leg operation at Selby General Hospital in 2025.
According to the Washington County court-filed lawsuit, Jacks, an army veteran, became a double amputee when the correctly identified leg was removed at another hospital. Brad Layne, Jacks’s attorney, stated that she endured physical injury, permanent disability, emotional distress, medical expenses, and other damages.
Jacks identified nine defendants in her lawsuit, including the hospital and her medical team. They were accused of gross negligence, battery, and reckless conduct. The complaint alleges that the defendants acted willfully and in conscious disregard of the likely catastrophic injury.
The lawsuit states that the initial amputation was part of a treatment plan for squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. It alleges that despite two surgical “time-outs”, the surgical team proceeded with the incorrect amputation, indicating a failure of basic safety procedures.
In a public statement, the hospital admitted to the avoidable error and confirmed that those involved have been held accountable. They expressed sorrow for the incident and offered their prayers for the patient and her family.
The lawsuit is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages for Jacks.
