From May 6, students enrolled in Grand Rapids Community College summer classes will experience a shift in traffic flow. Lyon and Fountain streets have been converted into two-way streets starting April 29. This adjustment is due to ongoing construction on Division Avenue and is expected to last until 2025.
Expected Confusions
GRCC Police Chief Rebecca Whitman stated the change, announced by the city a month prior, was postponed due to GRCC’s 107th Commencement Ceremony. Although no accidents or issues have been reported by GRCC Police, Whitman believes there could be confusion for those unfamiliar with the alteration to the streets.
The Importance of Planning Ahead
“Given the current construction downtown and the detour routes, our advice is to plan ahead, plot your route, and adhere to detour signs,” said Whitman. The college sent out an email on April 17, urging staff and students to be attentive and aware of this change.
GRCC’s Communication to Students and Staff
The notification from GRCC’s Communications staff emphasized, “Please exercise extra caution when traveling to and from campus, as others may not be aware of the traffic shift.” This is part of an attempt to ensure a smooth transition during this period of change.
