Officer Diller’s partner retaliated, resulting in the gunman being taken to Jamaica Hospital for treatment of his wounds, as confirmed in a news conference. Mayor Eric Adams expressed his sorrow at the conference, stating, “We have to bury another cop.”
Community Mourns Loss of Officer
In a poignant social media post, Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban, revealed that Officer Diller leaves behind a wife and a young child. The commissioner expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a fellow officer.
Investigation Underway
The identities of the suspect and the second person in the vehicle are yet to be disclosed by the officials. The driver, however, was previously arrested on a gun charge last year. The incident began when Officer Diller and his partner from the community response team approached the vehicle for being illegally parked at a bus stop on Mott Avenue. The suspect refused to leave the car, brandishing a weapon and firing at Officer Diller.
Increasing Officer Casualties in NYC
Expressing his grief, Commissioner Caban stated, “We should never be here. And we’re here far too many times.” Earlier this year, two New York police officers, Wilbert Mora and his partner, Jason Rivera, were also killed in the line of duty, responding to a domestic disturbance call in Harlem.
