Raleigh-Durham Airport’s Strategic Airline Pivot to Boost Gate Space

TL/DR –

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is expecting increased passenger numbers in the coming months, prompting several airlines to move into the smaller Terminal 1 to maximize gate space. Breeze Airways, Sun Country Airlines, and Alaska Airlines have all recently relocated. The airport is planning improvements to both terminals later this year, including new dining options, and there may be future expansions of both terminals as demand continues to rise.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport Expects Increased Summer Demand

As one of the busiest weekends of the year approaches, Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) officials have relocated several airlines in a bid to capitalize on gate space. With summer around the bend, the larger Terminal 2 has seen airlines shift to the smaller Terminal 1.

Stephanie Hawco, RDU’s Director of Media Relations, emphasized the need to cater to airline requirements while also preparing for anticipated growth. Thus, maximizing gate space in both terminals. Breeze Airways, Sun Country Airlines, and Alaska Airlines have all recently transitioned.

Frequent flyers have noticed a difference. Notably, Judy Tricome, a Southwest regular, mentioned a brief wait for a gate due to early arrival. Having witnessed the airport’s growth over the years, she expressed her desire for future improvements to accommodate the increased passenger flow.

Hawco assured that enhancements are due for both terminals later this year, including new dining options. With demand on the rise, the airport is considering expansion plans for both terminals. However, these would only commence after completing the new runway project – a key part of RDU’s Vision 2040 Master Plan to meet escalating demand. This project is slated for completion by the end of the decade.

Another factor driving the airline relocations is the growing number of international routes through the airport. Lufthansa, Aeromexico, and Copa are set to commence international flights this summer, necessitating the use of facilities at Terminal 2.
