Raleigh Community Mourns Young Life Lost to Gun Violence

A balloon release remembering 13-year-old Mykia Daniel was held on Saturday in Raleigh. Daniel tragically lost her life earlier in the week due to a gunshot wound.

She was discovered on North Hills Drive and a 16-year-old is now awaiting trial for a murder charge linked to the incident.

Despite the somber occurrence, the memorial event was a celebration of Mykia’s life, honoring the vibrant youth she was. More about her life story can be found here.

Emotions ran high as attendees shared stories about Mykia and reflections on the growing issue of gun violence in the community. “A child’s life was taken at 13. So we’re devastated,” mourned Tricia Hayes.

The incident occurred early Monday morning at a North Raleigh apartment complex, sparking widespread sorrow in the community. The grief has only intensified as days have passed.

Mourners at Chavis Park related their experiences with gun violence, echoing a shared struggle many families are facing. Bishop Patrick Dewberry emphasized the need for community dialogue and action against this ongoing issue.

Although a young life has been cruelly taken, faith offers some solace. “The only thing good that comes of this is that she’s with her Father now. Both of them,” Hayes said

The 16-year-old connected with the incident has been charged with murder. Mykia’s family is seeking justice and urging anyone with information to step forward.
