Over 1400 Unique Cast Iron Trivets from James Ellwood’s Collection Up for Auction

James Ellwood, a dedicated collector, spent over half a century amassing more than 2,000 one-of-a-kind antique and vintage cast iron trivets. Now, over 1,400 pieces from his collection will be sold in two online auctions by EJ’s Auction & Appraisal. The first auction starts at noon on Friday, January 26, and the second will be held in February.

The public can preview the collection at EJ’s from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturdays.

Ellwood’s interest in trivets began in the 1970s after receiving his mother’s collection. The passion even led him to open an antique store named ‘Irontiques’ in Scottsdale in the 1980s. He was a regular at trade shows across Wickenburg, California and more, bringing in a van full of trivets.

Born in Brooklyn and a Navy veteran, Ellwood also co-authored the book, “A Collectors Guide to Trivets and Stands” with Rob Roy Kelly, a popular reference among serious trivet collectors.

According to his daughter Ruthie Hunt, Ellwood, who also collected iron toys, stands, rakes and stoves, had a knack for identifying rare trivets and distinguishing them from reproductions.

Erik Hoyer, CEO of EJ’s Auction & Appraisal, noted the excellent condition of the collection, indicating Ellwood’s dedication to maintaining his pieces.

Ellwood continued to collect trivets up to two weeks before his death at 91. “We hope that his trivets find their way to collectors who are as passionate as he was,” said Hunt.

Interested collectors can view the trivets online and place their bids at www.ejsauction.com or by calling 623-878-2003.
