TL/DR –
A project is underway in West Michigan to connect trail systems along the Grand River, creating a total of 85 miles of non-motor vehicle trails. The initiative involves several organizations and has been supported with almost $1 million in funding for the completion of the Bass River Segment of the Idema Explorers Trail. The Vice President of Government Affairs for the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Josh Lunger, articulated that the trail system is part of a broader effort to improve community assets and the quality of life in the region.
Connecting Trail Systems in West Michigan
A project is underway to connect trail systems in West Michigan, following the Grand River from east to west, creating a total of 85 miles of trails.
Ah-Nab-Awen Park, a popular rivers-edge park in Grand Rapids, loved by visitors like Molly Nalamasu, is set to be linked with several other parks. “It would be great to have more routes or connected routes to go back and forth,” said Nalamasu.
While the project has been on the drawing board for years, more park systems are joining. Recently, almost $1 million was received to finalize the Bass River Segment of the Idema Explorers Trail, scheduled to link to the Greenway.
According to Josh Lunger, Vice President of Government Affairs for the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, the aim is to establish a continuous park trail system connecting parks across communities, stretching outside of Grand Rapids to the lakeshore.
Lunger emphasized that with other projects ongoing in Grand Rapids, the Greenway represents an integral part of the West Michigan Puzzle. He reiterated that facilities like the amphitheater and the soccer stadium will attract people from across West Michigan, enhancing the community’s quality of life.
