TL/DR –

Health departments around West Michigan are offering free radon test kits in January for National Radon Action Month. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., with about 21,000 deaths annually. The kits are easy to use, with results delivered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, and health officials recommend testing homes every two to three years.

Free Radon Test Kits in West Michigan During National Radon Action Month

In recognition of National Radon Action Month, health departments in West Michigan are providing free radon test kits this January. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, can infiltrate homes through cracks in foundations and walls. Being the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., it claims approximately 21,000 lives each year. Since Radon is invisible and odorless, a test kit is necessary for detection.

Health experts recommend testing homes every two-three years. The provided kit is user-friendly. “Hang a filter in your house for several days, then mail it in the provided self-addressed, pre-stamped envelope for analysis,” explained Kent County Health Department supervising sanitarian Russell Flewelling.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy will process and deliver your results. Check the online map for indoor radon results across Michigan.

Free testing kits — one per household — are available at the Kent County Health Department during normal office hours. The Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department is also distributing kits at 311 E. Alcott Street in Kalamazoo. Free kits are available at the Berrien County Health Department, and at each county office of the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency.
