TL/DR –

The Guilford County Department of Public Health is asking residents to mail any ticks they encounter to North Carolina State University. The residents are being asked to participate as “community scientists” in a study documenting the various tick species found throughout the state. As part of the study, participants, who must be 18 or older, are required to collect ticks, complete a survey, and mail their findings in a postage-paid return envelope.

Join the NC State University Tick Study

Instead of discarding ticks you might encounter, the Guilford County Department of Public Health is urging North Carolina residents to mail these ticks to NC State University for a scientific study. This study aims to document tick species found across North Carolina and invites citizens to partake as “community scientists”.

How to Participate

Interested participants must be 18 years or older and will be required to collect ticks naturally encountered. The Guilford County health department, a partner in the NC State study, will provide free tick collection kits. These kits can be picked up from the Environmental Health Division on the 3rd floor of the Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services at 1203 Maple St. in Greensboro, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Submission Rules

Participants are requested to submit ticks pulled off themselves, not animals. For each submitted kit, a survey must be filled out. There is no limit on the number of ticks you can send in. An envelope for free postage will be included in each kit. Please note that no compensation will be provided for participation.

Your privacy is guaranteed; no personal information will be shared and participants won’t be identified by their responses.
