Alifa Chowdhury and Elias Atkinson of the SHUT IT DOWN party are projected to become the 2024 president and vice president of Central Student Government at the University of Michigan, winning over 4,000 votes out of approximately 9,200. Chowdhury and Atkinson are part of the TAHRIR Coalition – a group of over 90 pro-Palestine student organizations at the university. The SHUT IT DOWN party plans to halt all Central Student Government activity and funding until the university divests from companies profiting off Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.


LSA juniors Alifa Chowdhury and Elias Atkinson, of the SHUT IT DOWN party, are projected to be the Central Student Government’s president and vice president for 2024. Unofficial results show they garnered 4,396 votes out of a total of 9,238.

Chowdhury and Atkinson are part of the TAHRIR Coalition, encompassing over 90 pro-Palestine student organizations at the University of Michigan. The SHUT IT DOWN party aims to cease all CSG activity and related funding until the University fully divests from businesses profiting from Israel’s military operation in Gaza.

The official results will be announced on March 31, following a grace period after voting closure for election violations to be reported to CSG and reviewed by the Central Student Judiciary.
