TL/DR –

Donald Trump cancelled his scheduled appearance at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina due to a rainstorm. This would have been his first public address after a week of silence following a New York City trial where he is facing charges of campaign finance fraud. Prior to the rally, Trump called for debates with President Joe Biden via a post on social media site Truth Social.

Trump Calls for Biden Debates, Cancels North Carolina Rally due to Rainstorm

Donald Trump cancelled his appearance at a planned rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, due to an approaching rainstorm. Prior to the cancellation, Trump had called for debates with Joe Biden, his rival in the November election.

The former president was already approaching Wilmington airport when he announced the cancellation to supporters, promising to reschedule the event

“I think we’re gonna have to do a rain check,” Trump said to the 7,000-8,000 people gathered at the Aero Center at Wilmington airport with just a few days of advance notice.

While Trump spent the past week in a New York City courtroom defending against campaign finance fraud charges, he called for debates with President Joe Biden via a social media message on Truth Social. “I am calling for Debates, ANYTIME ANYWHERE ANYPLACE,” the post said.

Trump and the Republican National Committee withdrew from the Commission on Presidential Debates after the final debates of the 2020 campaign season. Meanwhile, Wilmington holds significance for Lara Trump, former president’s daughter-in-law and current chairwoman of the RNC, having grown up and completed high school there.

Despite North Carolina’s support for Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections, changes in demographics and abortion laws may make the state more competitive for Biden this year.

Ron Raynor from Jackson, North Carolina, about an hour drive north of Wilmington, expressed his disappointment at the cancellation. “Oh god, I’ve been wanting to come forever,” Raynor said, criticizing Biden’s economic policies and expressing his preference for those under Trump.
