U.S. Air Force medical staff combined efforts with local and global health professionals on Monday to initiate the second phase of the Lesser Antilles Medical Assistance Team (LAMAT) 2025 mission in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The mission aims to provide essential healthcare services, enhance military readiness, and solidify international partnerships.

Over the two-week mission, the team, comprising more than 50 international medical experts, will provide primary, surgical, and dental care services along with equipment repair in various locations across the Caribbean island nation, including remote regions like Canouan and Union Island.

Sandy Peters-Phillips, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Consumer Affairs, highlighted the power of international cooperation during the mission launch. “This mission is a testament to the power of international cooperation. We are privileged to have the support of the United States, our local health professionals, volunteers, and partners. It serves as a foreign policy tool fostering relationships, regional stability, and international cooperation,” said Peters-Phillips.

The mission’s impact, according to Peters-Phillips, will extend past medical treatments, promoting knowledge exchange and the strengthening of healthcare infrastructure. “Our international partners’ expertise and generosity complement the dedication of our local medical teams, ensuring that this mission leaves a lasting impact,” she added.

Col. Brian Gavitt, command surgeon for Air Forces Southern, emphasized the dual purpose and logistical challenges of the mission. He stated that the mission tests the readiness of military personnel to deploy and provide support in crisis or conflict, driving adaptability, and interoperability.

Brig. Gen. Tara Nolan, mobilization assistant to the commander of Air Forces Southern, accentuated the mission’s value in preparing military medics for future crises and encouraged participants to view the mission as a learning opportunity to build lasting collaborations.

The LAMAT 2025 mission builds on the successes of previous years, delivering life-changing procedures and crucial medical services to numerous patients. “We extend our gratitude to the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for hosting LAMAT 2025 and for their continued partnership and friendship,” Gavitt concluded.
