Dogs across the U.S. are falling ill due to a mysterious respiratory illness, which has been fatal in some cases. Researchers believe the cause could be a new bacterial infection, with symptoms including coughing, difficulty breathing, nasal discharge, lethargy, and loss of appetite; in rare cases, it has turned into pneumonia. The illness has been reported in multiple states, including Colorado, Massachusetts, Oregon, Rhode Island, Illinois, Maryland, and Wyoming, with possible cases in California, Indiana, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, and Florida.

Mysterious Respiratory Illness Afflicting Dogs Across the U.S.

A mysterious respiratory illness is reportedly rendering dogs sick across the U.S., with some fatalities in rare cases. Although Michigan has seen no confirmed instances, neighboring states like Indiana and Illinois have reported cases. The cause could be a new bacterial infection, according to NBC’s report.

Researchers identify a pathogen potentially causing the illness, says West Michigan veterinarian Ryan Carpenter. Symptoms to watch for include coughing, difficulty breathing, nasal discharge, lethargy, and appetite loss. In rare instances, this illness escalates to pneumonia, resulting in fatalities.

“Sadly, these symptoms might resemble any cough seen in dogs or other upper respiratory infections,” says Carpenter. “Distinguishing a standard upper respiratory infection from this new illness can be challenging.”

The illness is reported in multiple states, including Colorado, Massachusetts, Oregon, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Wyoming, according to the New York Times. Probable cases in states like California, Indiana, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, and Florida have also been noted.

Carpenter advises West Michigan pet owners to remain vigilant but not panic. He emphasizes, “Ensure your pet’s vaccines are up to date if they are around other dogs, especially for dogs that are immunocompromised or unhealthy, avoid exposing them to other dogs.”
