Marquette High School Students Learn Legal Trial through Mock Trial

Marquette Senior High School students in Michigan got a firsthand experience of a legal trial on Wednesday. The interactive learning came from a mock trial held at the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Youth Academy, its second event of 2024.

The students experienced a lecture from legal professionals, including Marquette County Prosecutor Jenna Nelson. The student jury then heard a case against a fellow student, who was being ‘accused’ of possession of marijuana on school premises.

“This mock trial provides a valuable opportunity for students to understand the legal process firsthand. It starts with law enforcement, moves to the prosecutor, and then comes to trial,” said Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt. “The students can witness diverse aspects of a trial including the role of the judge and the defense attorney.”

Breckin Jensen, a member of the Youth Academy, shared his learning experience. “I gained significant insights into court proceedings and the different roles within the court,” he commented.

At the conclusion of the arguments by the prosecutor and the defense attorney, the student jury ruled their peer innocent.
