TL/DR –

The CIA is planning to cut over 1,000 positions through attrition in the next few years, in line with the Trump administration’s plans to shrink the federal government. This move follows the recent dismissal of about 80 newly hired employees, and officers working on diversity issues, though the latter has been temporarily halted by a judge. Other intelligence agencies, such as the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the National Security Agency, are also planning reductions.

C.I.A. Plans Staff Reductions, According to Officials

Officials have revealed plans for the C.I.A. to decrease staff positions by over 1,000 through attrition in the coming years, a move aligning with the Trump administration’s federal government downsizing goals.

The agency ruled out mass layoffs after 80 new employees were dismissed in March. Furthermore, termination of officers working on diversity issues has been temporarily paused by a judge’s order as per this source.

Anticipated reductions are set to utilize normal attrition, including retirements and resignations only.

A C.I.A. spokesperson indirectly confirmed the reduction plans. John Ratcliffe, the C.I.A. Director, is “moving swiftly” to align the workforce with administration’s national security priorities. The cuts were corroborated by anonymous officials.

Agency changes will “provide opportunities for emerging leaders and better position C.I.A. to fulfill its mission,” the spokeswoman added.

The plan to trim C.I.A.’s size was previously reported by The Washington Post.

While the C.I.A. doesn’t publicly discuss staff size, it’s estimated to be around 22,000. Other intelligence agencies like the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the National Security Agency are also planning cuts.
