TL/DR –

Donald Trump posted a racist video on his Truth Social account that depicted former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as apes, sparking fury from top Democrats and minimal response from Republicans. The post was eventually removed after 12 hours with a senior White House official citing an error by a staffer. Trump later refused to apologise, claiming he had not seen the racist part of the video before it was posted.

Democrats Demand GOP Response to Trump’s Racist Video

Democrats expressed outrage on Friday at Donald Trump‘s racist video portraying former president Barack and Michelle Obama as apes. This is part of President Trump’s increasing late-night posts on his Truth Social account.

Democratic House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, challenged Republican leaders on X, “Why are GOP leaders like [Senate majority leader] John Thune standing by this sick individual? Every single Republican must immediately denounce Donald Trump’s disgusting bigotry.”

Critically, only a few Republicans openly condemned the overtly racist video. South Carolina senator Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the chamber, called it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.”

Despite the outcry, it took 12 hours and attempts to dismiss the outrage by the administration officials before the post was finally removed. Trump later refused to apologize, claiming he approved an aide sharing the video on his account but didn’t see the part with the racist depiction of the Obamas.

Majority Leader Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, the top two Republicans in Congress, didn’t comment, leading to Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer to post on X, “Racist. Vile. Abhorrent. This is dangerous and degrades our country – where are Senate Republicans?”
