Recent surveys show that one in four adults over the age of 50 use at least one supplement to boost their brain health, hoping to enhance memory and sharpen attention and focus. However, there is no conclusive proof that these brain health supplements deliver on their promises.

The FDA does not monitor testing or ingredient accuracy of over-the-counter products, only ensuring that the supplement does not make health claims related to the treatment of specific diseases. For brain health supplements, manufacturers can claim that their product helps with mental alertness or memory loss, but not that it protects against or improves diseases like Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. They don’t have to validate any claim that their brain health supplements are effective.

Nutrient Combination in Brain Supplements

Many brain health supplements contain nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and various B vitamins. These are often found in diets such as the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and the MIND diet, which may improve cognitive function. However, it is unclear whether the combination of nutrients, individual nutrients, or other factors contribute to this improvement.

The Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel help build cell membranes in the brain and may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that could protect brain cells. Studies show a link between higher intake of fish and a lower risk of cognitive decline, but omega-3 supplements made from fish oil haven’t shown the same effect.

Ginkgo Biloba, a supplement made from the extract of gingko tree leaves, is often sold as a memory enhancer. However, the Gingko Evaluation of Memory (GEM) study found that taking Ginkgo Biloba did not lower the overall rate of developing dementia.

Despite the lack of scientific evidence, people continue to buy brain health supplements. Most often, this is because it is easier to take a pill than to make lasting lifestyle changes. Instead of relying on supplements, consider engaging in regular exercise and following a plant-based diet, which can help with memory and brain health in the long term. Additionally, it is always advisable to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.
