Ex-NFL Trainee JB Copeland: Powerful Advocate for Mental Health

JB Copeland: From Gridiron to Mental Health Advocacy

Football Dreams and Reality

Over the past few years, JB Copeland has become a beacon of hope in the mental health advocacy space, especially for young men. However, this was not always his intended path. As a 31-year-old, his dreams were once on the football field, aiming for a spot in the NFL.

Unfortunately, an unexpected life event during his junior year at the University of North Carolina forced Copeland to adjust to a new reality.

Early Success in Football

John Byron Copeland, born on December 6, 1994, showcased his talent as a gifted linebacker from a young age. He began his football career in Texas while attending Southlake Carroll High School. His football journey proceeded to Navarro College and finally to New Mexico State University, where he began his Division I career.

His promising future continued as he signed with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in December 2015. Sadly, back-to-back concussions during his debut season ended not only his football career but also drastically changed his life.

The Journey of Self-Discovery

Without football, Copeland had to redefine his identity. This struggle led him into a cycle of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. However, a severe panic attack in April 2022 forced him to confront his internal turmoil head-on.

Realizing the need for professional help, Copeland admitted himself to an addiction rehab facility. Through therapy, physical fitness, and clean eating, he started his journey towards healing.

Embracing the Role of Mental Health Advocate

Post-rehab, Copeland found that his story resonated with many, inspiring him to become a mental health advocate. He channeled his experiences into creating content focused on emotional awareness, mental health, healing, and identity, reaching millions on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

In 2026, he launched his social series Whatever Works. He also published his first book, Sappy Medium: The Rough Draft.

The Platform of Positivity

Today, Copeland continues his advocacy, bridging the gap between mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health through his content and upcoming app. He emphasizes the importance of honesty, community, and personal growth in mental health.

Copeland’s story serves as a reminder that your life is bigger than any game or goal. He advocates for dealing with emotions in a healthy way and not letting stress or performance pressure rule your life.
