Zavala Appointed as Jumbos’ Athletics Civic Engagement Leader

Athletics Department at Tufts University Welcomes Civic Engagement Administrator

On 27th August 2026, Emma Zavala joined the esteemed ranks of Tufts University’s athletics department, stepping into the important role of Civic Engagement Administrator for Athletics.

Emma Zavala’s Prior Community Engagement Experience

Prior to Tufts, Zavala honed her skills in community outreach and health programming during an internship at Harvard University. She designed, planned, and administered comprehensive Health and Wellness programs, inclusive of clubs, weekly classes, workshops, and events aligned with the community’s needs.

Role at Tufts University Athletics Department

At Tufts, Zavala plans to leverage her passion for public service and community engagement, working closely with the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life. Her mission will be to bolster civic life for student-athletes, creating numerous opportunities for connection and engagement. Part of her focus will also be the ongoing growth and development of the Civic Life Ambassadors program – a year-long leadership and civic engagement opportunity specifically designed for Tufts student-athletes.

Academic and Sports Career

A graduate of the University of San Diego, Zavala received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology in 2024, graduating magna cum laude. She furthered her education with a Master’s degree in Education, Policy and Analysis from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. In addition to her academics, Zavala made notable contributions to sports as a coxswain during her undergraduate years at the University of San Diego, earning multiple accolades and awards.

She stated, “Emma brings with her a commitment to community engagement and a passion for civic impact. With her experience as a former Division I student-athlete, she has demonstrated commitment, dedication and leadership. I am confident in her ability to pair her passion for civic engagement and commitment to the student-athlete experience.”

Emma Zavala expressed her enthusiasm about joining the Tufts team, stating, “I’m so excited to join such an incredible program and work with these highly-motivated athletes.”

Zavala, stepping into this role, replaces Frank Roche, who recently left Tufts to become the head football coach at Belmont Hill School.
