The race for the best health and fitness wearables is heating up, with the latest Pixel Watch models — the Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5 — receiving a significant upgrade.

Google’s announcement details a free update that allows users to monitor blood pressure trends, sleep breathing metrics, and insulin resistance trends. Notably, this insulin resistance monitoring feature sets Pixel Watches apart from Apple Watch models.

The blood pressure and insulin resistance features offer longer-term patterns rather than immediate clinical readings, presenting assessments once a month.

These features were announced during the Pixel Watch 5 unveiling back in August. The exact schedule for the feature rollout was unclear until now.

Data-Driven Health Insights

Google’s statement explains that the insulin resistance trend model was trained on more than a trillion data points gathered from over 5 million users, while the blood pressure model was developed using billions of minutes of raw heart and movement data.

The sleep breathing quality trends feature provides a daily report on your breathing variations throughout the night. This report can help assess sleep quality and determine the best sleep routine and environment for optimal rest.

The Pixel Watch 4 and 5 models also now include Breathing Emergency Detection in select European markets, including France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK. This feature can detect dangerously low oxygen saturation levels and can even place a call to emergency services.

For Fitbit Air users, the blood pressure and insulin resistance trends features will be available later this year. However, accessing these features will require a Google Health Premium subscription, which is not required for Pixel Watch users.
