Summit County Council Considers $150 Million Bond For Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District

The Summit County Council is contemplating whether to add a $150 million bond question to the November ballot for the Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District. As the August 20 deadline approaches, both council members and leaders of the recreation district report hearing both support and concerns from taxpayers.

What Will the Bond Fund?

The proposed bond is intended to fund the construction of two new fieldhouses, which will be paid off through property taxes. Ryan Bruce, Chair of the Basin Rec Board, anticipates a shift in public opinion once the district finalizes the cost.

Public Hearing Raises Concerns Over High Bond Amount

At a recent public hearing, several taxpayers voiced concerns over the bond amount. One concerned resident, Orlie Bush, argued that the bond would add to an already high tax burden. In response to these worries, Bruce revealed that Basin Rec is considering proposing a smaller bond.

Proposed Facilities

The proposal includes two potential fieldhouses, one in Jeremy Ranch with rock climbing facilities, and the other in Silver Creek Village with a larger pool. Both facilities would also include various sports and fitness amenities.

Community Opinion Split on Bond

According to District Director Robert Parrish, repeated polling shows a divide among residents about increasing debt. Survey results also indicate that the community prioritizes an aquatics facility over indoor climbing. Council members agreed to allow Basin Rec to return with a revised proposal later this month.

Concerns Over Bond Failure & Transparency

Some council members expressed concerns over the risk of the bond failing if it were put to a vote. They stressed the importance of transparency and data-driven decisions. The council and Basin Rec board have a few weeks left to revise their plans.
