Presidential Health and Fitness: A Matter of Concern
Mental acuity is a common concern as individuals age. Dementia and cognitive decline can lead to frustration and uncertainty, not just for the individual, but also for their caretakers. It’s one thing to witness these symptoms in a friend or relative; it’s another to see them in the President of the United States.
The President’s mental fitness is critical, given the high level of responsibility they carry. The annual Presidential health assessment is a standard measure of their ability to execute their duties. Reports on President Joe Biden’s health by Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the White House physician, have been under scrutiny to ensure his fitness for office.
The Details of President Biden’s Health Reports
In the health reports, it was reassuring to note that there were no indications of neurological disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, or ascending lateral sclerosis. However, these reports notably excluded any mention of an MRI scan of the brain or neuro-cognitive testing. Despite peripheral neuropathy being identified, there was no cause for concern regarding President Biden’s fitness to serve.
The usage of a wheelchair, as suggested in the book “Original Sin,” would also not question his fitness as President FDR served successfully from a wheelchair during World War II. The main concern would be if any physical feebleness was tied to a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.
The Need for Transparency in Presidential Health Reports
There has always been an ongoing debate about the transparency of health information for Presidents, from Woodrow Wilson to Ronald Reagan. Despite this, it’s crucial for the public to have access to accurate and comprehensive health information about their leaders, particularly for the highest office.
While we still don’t know the exact health condition of former President Biden, it’s known that he had brain aneurysms and a bleed in 1988 and suffers from atrial fibrillation. These conditions could lead to long-term cognitive problems and an increased risk of cognitive decline or vascular dementia.
As we wish former President Biden well, we also advocate for greater transparency and disclosure regarding the health of our leaders. Click here to read more from Dr. Marc Siegel.
