DC Fitness Industry Clash Over Gym Cancellations
Why is the Fitness Industry in Washington D.C. Undergoing Evolution?
The allure of the fitness industry has permeated the walls of Washington D.C., with significant interest from both sides of the political divide. For a sector still in its infancy, this bipartisan goodwill augurs well for the future.
Goodwill vs Trust in the Fitness Industry
At the ATN Innovation Summit 2026, the Health & Fitness Association (HFA) highlighted the distinction between goodwill and trust. The panel, which included HFA interim president Greta Wagner, chief of staff Mike Goscinski, and VP of research Anton Severin, delved into the public’s perception of the fitness industry.
Public Perception of the Fitness Industry
Positive developments were highlighted, such as lawmakers’ heightened interest in fitness and wellness. The HFA presented survey data that showed the fitness and exercise industry outperforming others in terms of public reputation, even scoring higher than the tech, automotive, and hospitality sectors.
Collaborations between the HFA, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Defense have also led to a new program offering free gym access and optional coaching to military recruits.
Trust Issues With the Fitness Industry
But it’s not all rosy; trust issues persist. The HFA revealed that less than half of policymakers believe the fitness industry is committed to fair and transparent membership practices. Among the general public, a huge majority find cancelling gym memberships excessively difficult.
Anecdotal evidence from Goscinski underlines this issue. He recounts being asked for help to cancel a gym membership by a lawmaker before even getting down to business. It’s an experience that does little to enhance the industry’s reputation.
The Click-to-Cancel Debate
Cancellations are at the heart of the recent debate on click-to-cancel policies, with contentious rules about cancellation practices. Even with the click-to-cancel rule vacated by a federal appeals court in 2025, gym operators remain subject to consumer protection laws at both state and federal levels. This issue is far from resolved, with policymakers like NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani cracking the whip on misleading gym membership practices.
The Fitness Industry’s Road to Trust
To address this trust deficit, the industry needs to be regarded as a reliable part of preventative health infrastructure. To achieve a larger role in policy-making, the HFA is also emphasizing the fitness industry’s economic benefits. A recent study, presenting the government’s return on investment when weight-loss medication is combined with physical activity, showed significant healthcare savings.
Wagner underscored the importance of trustworthiness, industry standards, and customer-friendly policies, including easy membership cancellation, to improve the industry’s reputation.
