The Great Dismal Swamp, nestled in Northeastern North Carolina and bordering southeastern Virginia, is a 112,000-acre swampland. This wetland, located between Norfolk, Virginia, and Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is teeming with wildlife including foxes, bears, alligators, and over 200 bird species.

A rich variety of plant life also thrives in this wetland, hosting about 47 different species, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service. FWS also reveals that this refuge is the largest intact fragment of what was once a vast swamp spanning over one million acres. As of the 1970s, the 112,000 acres we see today remain, making it the largest remaining forested swamp in the eastern United States.

Activities at The Great Dismal Swamp

At the heart of this swamp is Lake Drummond, encompassing 3,100 acres. Through North Carolina government parks, visitors can engage in various activities such as hiking, camping, biking, paddling, and fishing. Access to this area is free, and pets (on a leash) are welcome in the outdoor spaces.

Described by Daily Passport as the geologic remnant of a vast sea, the Great Dismal Swamp has gained global recognition as one of the world’s most important wetlands. Other wetlands on the list were located in Florida, Louisiana, Indonesia, Botswana, and the Great Vasyugan Mire in Russia.
