September: Suicide Prevention Month Recognition
Recognize September as Suicide Prevention Month by attending the “A Million Reasons to Stay” event set to occur from 4-5:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Arkansas Union’s north terrace.
The Event: More Than Just an Interaction
This event provides students with an opportunity to reflect, interact with mental health professionals and peers, and participate in creative activities like designing buttons, making bracelets, and engaging with a chalkboard display. You’ll also find information about mental health resources.
Throughout the past month, University Housing and Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provided bulletin boards in student residence halls, encouraging students to share their personal reasons for persevering.
Offering Support: The Embedded Team
The Embedded Team, a cadre of mental health professionals providing direct support to on-campus residents, formulated this initiative to ensure students are aware of the comprehensive support available to those facing struggles. You’re never alone in your journey.
“As a mental health clinician, I encounter students managing academic stress, social and relational challenges, and financial burdens while transitioning into adulthood. These can cause feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression,” shared Suellen Ayala Rojas, an Embedded Team mental health clinician.
Addressing Mental Health: The Event’s Purpose
This event tackles the critical issues of mental health and suicide prevention, highly relevant topics in college life. It serves as a platform to increase awareness, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, and encourage students to seek help when needed. It fosters a caring culture and promotes the concept that life has countless reasons to be lived.
