Training: An Integral Part of Acting
Gyllenhaal emphasizes the importance of physical fitness in his work. According to him, training helped him get through, no matter what was happening in his life. “I’m always trying to find roles that allow me to stay physical,” he told Men’s Health.
For Gyllenhaal, the preparation for “Road House” was like having fun with his friend and director of the movie, Doug Liman.
Remake of a Classic Film
The movie “Road House” is a remake of the 1989 film of the same name, featuring Patrick Swayze. In the past, Gyllenhaal and Swayze had costarred in the 2001 science fiction thriller “Donnie Darko.”
Gyllenhaal fondly remembers Swayze, who died of pancreatic cancer in September 2009, as a generous and kind-hearted person. He said, “If Patrick were around, I would have loved to be talking to him about this. He was a consummate artist, and he understood what it meant. I would hope that he would know that I have the utmost respect and love for him.”
Debut of MMA Fighter Conor McGregor in Movies
The movie also features MMA fighter Conor McGregor in his first-ever movie role. Gyllenhaal says that working with McGregor was like “an exchange of crafts”.
However, Gyllenhaal couldn’t resist indulging in his favorite cheat meal amidst all the intense training: “Vanilla cake with vanilla icing — ideally Yossy Arefi’s recipe in Snacking Cakes,” he reveals.
Behind the Scenes of Gyllenhaal’s Fitness Preparations
Speaking to PEOPLE, Gyllenhaal mentions that it took “a village” to prepare him for the role. This includes his “incredible” trainer Jason Walsh, “wonderful” chef Paulette Tejeda, and a nutritionist.
