Fitness, Health, and Community Resources: Shreveport’s Annual Fit Fest

Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation’s latest iteration of the annual Fit Fest provided an array of health and wellness resources, free fitness activities, and valuable community resources to the attendees at the Southern Hills Community Center. The event was designed to serve the local community, including families, veterans, and residents interested in exploring local wellness opportunities.

Linking Neighbors with Wellness

Shalon Lewis, the Lead Superintendent of the event, articulated their mission to bridge the gap between neighbors by offering wellness resources under one roof. The event served as a platform for the community to unite and discover fitness and regional resources within their neighborhood.

On-Site Activities and Resources

The Fit Fest encouraged attendees to partake in a variety of activities such as a park stroll, line dancing, and an introduction to belly dancing. In addition to these, attendees learned more about nutritional information and connected with local support services. The event’s organizers emphasized the promotion of healthy habits that extend beyond the confines of the gym.

Impact on Attendees

For Karon Williams, a participant at the Fit Fest, the event represented a significant milestone as she was recovering from a recent knee replacement surgery. Williams appreciated not only the physical fitness aspect of the event but also the broader message it carried. She acknowledged the event’s emphasis on healthy eating habits, community involvement, and community preservation.

Another participant, Chequitha Chatman, extended an invitation to others to attend future iterations of the event. According to Chatman, the environment at the Fit Fest was extremely encouraging and welcoming.
