A Revolutionary Mental Health Tool for MJC Community
In collaboration with Aiberry, Modesto Junior College Health Services has introduced a free, virtual, and anonymous mental health self-screening tool for students, staff, and community members.
The Role of Wellness in Academic Success
As wellness plays a crucial role in both academic and personal success, MJC sought a tool that gives everyone access without the need to visit the campus in person. Aiberry’s self-screener provides this access,” mentions Mayra Magallanes, the college’s Interim Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator.
Aiberry: A Cutting-Edge Mental Health Assessment Platform
The Aiberry platform describes itself as “an innovative, practical mental health assessment platform using advanced AI technology to analyze user text, audio, and video cues during a short conversation to provide a quantified risk score and other health insights in real time.”
Unparalleled Access to Mental Health Information
Users gain access to 11 mental health screeners, campus, local, and national mental health resources, and information about lifestyle factors that can affect one’s well-being. The tool is not intended to diagnose mental health conditions but assists users in understanding their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and suggests steps to improve their mental health.
Anonymous and Accessible Mental Health Care
The service does not require login information or MJC-specific credentials, making it an anonymous and accessible resource for the broader community. However, MJC Health Services emphasizes the resource is primarily aimed at MJC students.
A 2023 survey, which led to the partnership between MJC and Aiberry, disclosed that an estimated 64% of MJC students are facing symptoms of at least one significant mental health problem, such as depression, anxiety disorders, suicidal thoughts, self-injury, or eating disorders.
The Urgent Need for Mental Health Services
“The immediate need for mental health services is prevalent everywhere, and MJC is no exception,” adds Magallanes. “Research from the Healthy Minds Network shows that students facing mental health challenges are twice as likely to leave college before completing their degrees.”
Additional Mental Health Support for MJC Students
Alongside the mental health screener, MJC offers one-on-one counseling for students, 24/7 virtual mental health support, group therapy sessions, wellness-focused events, and presentations. A new on-campus wellness center will open during the 2025-26 academic year, funded by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.
“Expanding access to evidence-based care and preventive services can play a vital role in improving student retention and success,” Magallanes asserts. “By continuing to invest in and promote mental health support, MJC aims to foster a healthier, more resilient student body equipped to meet the demands of college life and beyond.”
