Reviving the Glory: Boise State University Athletics Tradition
Virtual Communication for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
When you took up the job, Christian was back in Scotland. This means that all the exchanges about his cancer diagnosis, treatment, and the subsequent plan were conducted over the phone, said McCurry. Handling something as grave as cancer with someone you’ve only virtually ‘met’ was an unusual situation to find yourself in.
The Power of Hope and Goals during Chemotherapy
McCurry assured Christian over the phone saying, “Even though it may not be your immediate concern now, should you decide to return after overcoming this, it will definitely be feasible.” This assurance was all Christian needed as he braced himself for the arduous chemotherapy process. “That was the primary goal I strived for,” Graham admitted. “You need to have something to look forward to during times like these.”
Juggling Athletics and Academics
As McCurry liaised with other staff members at Boise State to manage the pause in Christian’s athletic and academic career, Christian entered what he terms “the most extended three months of my life.”
Competitive Spirit in Chemotherapy
Christian, a born competitor, saw his treatment as another form of training. From the onset, his consultant was positive, stating that his collegiate athlete skills would greatly aid him in enduring chemotherapy. Christian acknowledges that he was fortunate to have been diagnosed early, attributing his fitness, youth, and early diagnosis as crucial factors enabling him to undergo a more exhaustive treatment than typically suggested.
Role of Physical Fitness in Fighting Cancer
“You’re in the best possible position due to your impressive fitness level,” his consultant reassured him. “Your VO2 max, aerobic capacity, and cardiovascular health will significantly assist you in combating this disease.”
