Nearly 1,000 seniors gathered in the square to commemorate the National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day, showcasing their enthusiasm for a healthy and active lifestyle.

The Role of NYC Department for the Aging in Promoting Senior Health

The remarkable event was organized by the NYC Department for the Aging. The Department highlighted the significance of regular physical activity in promoting healthy aging. Additionally, they used the event as a platform to promote year-round programs available at senior centers across the city.

New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, emphasized the need for seniors to have unlimited access to health and fitness opportunities. He noted that the annual event is much more than just a celebration; it also serves as a chance for seniors to dance, move, and share laughter. He further pledged his commitment to provide resources and support for the older residents of the city.

Activities During The National Older Adult Health and Fitness Day

The celebration kicked off with basic bend and stretch exercises aimed at enhancing flexibility and mobility. These exercises are designed to assist seniors in their daily tasks such as reaching overhead items or crossing the street safely. The event also included a session of Laughter Yoga, a unique blend of breathing techniques and movements known to reduce stress, fight social isolation, and boost both mental and physical well-being.

Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, the Aging Commissioner of NYC, praised the event as a celebration of movement and connectivity. She stressed the importance of exercising for aging well. Stating that any form of exercise, be it stretching, walking or sharing a laugh with neighbors, contributes to one’s independence and overall well-being. She further reiterated their commitment to providing healthy aging opportunities for seniors in every neighborhood through their centers, programs, and partnerships.
