Biblical Figures Show Their Game in Church Gym Artwork

You were just there to coach your kid’s soccer team in a local church gym, when suddenly you spot them: two exceptional paintings of Biblical figures engaging in modern sports.

The first painting aptly titled “Air Moses” depicts Moses donning winged sandals and making an impressive leap. The traditional flaming bush from the Old Testament is ingeniously replaced with a blazing basketball. The other painting showcases “Pickleball Paul” the Apostle, casually sporting flip flops and a peace sign, seemingly taking a break from his prolific letter writing to practice his third shot drop in pickleball.

When you first saw these paintings, it was as if they were a silent representation of a church gym.

Unexpected Viral Phenomenon

Almost instinctively, you took out your phone and captured the moment. Posting the video online, you were thinking it would just be a funny post for your friends. But to your surprise, it had garnered 20,000 views by the next morning, posted on Instagram on March 6, and it now boasts nearly 200,000 likes.

Check out some of the amusing comments that the post received:

  • “Our Father, who hoop in heaven.”
  • “This is what I picture when my phone autocorrects to “holy shot.”
  • “And three days later Jesus rose… above the rim with a nasty 360 windmill.”
  • “He did not come to be served. Instead, he came to serve others.”
  • “🎶 Prophet like it’s hot, prophet like it’s hot. 🎶”
  • “The real Doctor J.”
  • “He is rizzin.”

The Story Behind the Paintings

The gym is located in Good Shepard United Methodist Church in Madison, Alabama. The church encourages community engagement by allowing various teams and social groups to use its gym. The amusing paintings were part of this community outreach effort.

According to Pastor Brittany Dawkins-Camp, the church had just started the Upward Sports basketball program. They wanted something light-hearted and memorable to adorn the gym walls, and that’s how “Air Moses” came into existence.

The paintings were created by Atlanta artist Chad Camp. Air Moses first appeared around 2006, while Pickleball Paul joined him about two years ago.

Dawkins-Camp explains that Pickleball Paul was added when the church initiated a community pickleball league that plays thrice a week in the gym. Interestingly, both figures were painted by the same artist, who happens to be Dawkins-Camp’s ex-husband.

Community Revels in Viral Attention

You’ve been taken aback by the video’s popularity, even finding yourself discussing it on a Chicago news channel during a cruise. The local congregation shares in your excitement.

According to Dawkins-Camp, they even aired the news clip during a recent worship session as part of their announcements. She finds it delightful that their unique murals, a symbol of the church’s connection to the community, have garnered so much love.
