Canadian PM Trudeau Reshuffles Cabinet Amid Rising Pressure to Resign

TL/DR –

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reshuffled his cabinet following the resignation of deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland over disagreements on how to handle a potential “tariff war” with the US. Trudeau, who has been the country’s prime minister since 2015, is facing increasing calls to resign ahead of federal elections due by October. The left-leaning New Democratic Party plans to put forward a vote of no-confidence against Trudeau’s government when the Canadian parliament reconvenes in late January.

Trudeau Reshuffles Cabinet Amid Calls for Resignation

Following his deputy’s resignation, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revamped his cabinet, causing ripples across the country and reigniting demands for his resignation.

Ontario MP David McGuinty takes over public safety, while Nathaniel Erskine-Smith becomes housing minister. Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland had resigned over disputes with Trudeau regarding a potential tariff war with the US.

US Tariff Threats Trigger Cabinet Resignation

Last month, President-elect Donald Trump threatened a 25% tariff on Canada unless it curbed irregular migration and drug trafficking. Freeland cited these tariff threats as a key reason for her resignation.

Despite growing pressure, Trudeau, prime minister since 2015, and Liberal leader faces pressure to resign ahead of late October’s federal elections.

Decreasing popularity and different challenges have led to the Liberal Party trailing behind the Conservative Party in recent polls. Despite Freeland’s resignation provoking some Liberal MPs to demand Trudeau’s resignation, many still support him.

Trudeau’s Future in Doubt

According to The Globe and Mail, Trudeau has been discussing his future with senior cabinet members and party leaders, with a decision expected early next year.

Meanwhile, the New Democratic Party (NDP) plans to table a no-confidence motion in January. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh criticized Trudeau, saying the Liberals do not deserve another chance.

If the no-confidence motion passes, Trudeau’s government will fall, leading to new elections.
