Cuba Protests Against US Mission Head Michael Hammer for ‘Meddling Behavior’
TL/DR –
Cuba’s Foreign Ministry has protested against the conduct of the head of the US mission, Michael Hammer, accusing him of “unfriendly and meddling behavior”. The Ministry claims that Hammer has incited Cuban citizens to commit crimes, attack the country’s constitutional order, and act against the authorities. This dispute escalates the already tense relations between the two nations, with the US re-adding Cuba to its list of “state sponsors of terrorism” and hinting at new sanctions.
Cuba Protests against US Diplomat
Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently issued a protest against Michael Hammer, the head of the US mission to Cuba. The Ministry accused Hammer of meddling and unfriendly acts since his arrival in late 2024.
The Ministry expressed concern over Hammer’s conduct, which they claim encourages Cubans to commit serious crimes and act against their own government. It was also mentioned that his immunity as a diplomatic representative cannot be used as cover for acts against Cuba’s sovereignty.
US-Cuba Tense Relations
The state of affairs between Cuba and the US has been tense for decades, dating back to the Cold War era. However, the relations began worsening again when President Donald Trump assumed his second term.
Despite efforts to improve relations by Democratic presidents like Barack Obama and Joe Biden, the Trump administration has reverted these efforts. It was during Trump’s tenure that Cuba was reinstated to the US’s list of “state sponsors of terrorism”.
The appointment of officials with a hardline stance towards Cuba in Trump’s cabinet, particularly Marco Rubio, has also played a role in escalating tensions.
Increased Pressure on Cuba
In recent times, Trump’s administration has indicated plans to increase pressure on Cuba, with actions such as revoking visas for anyone working with Cuba’s medical system, and condemning Cuba for re-arresting a group of dissidents.
Cuban officials, however, continue to deny allegations of attempting to destabilise its leadership and claim to maintain commitment towards the freedom and thoughts of others.
Sanctions and Repercussions
The US recently labelled Cuba as a “not fully cooperating country” under the Arms Export Control Act due to accusations of harbouring 11 fugitives who face terrorism-related charges in the US, thereby limiting Cuba’s ability to purchase weaponry from the US. Despite protests, the US remains undeterred and continues to support dissidents against Cuba’s influence.
