House Ethics Committee to Release Report on Ex-Rep. Matt Gaetz’s Conduct

TL/DR –

The House Ethics Committee will publicly release a report of its investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s alleged misconduct, including sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, accepting improper gifts and obstruction of the House probe. Gaetz, who resigned from the House last month following allegations, withdrew his bid for attorney general after details emerged about the testimony of women who spoke to the Ethics Committee. Despite objections from House Speaker Mike Johnson and others on the grounds of precedent, the Committee decided to release the report, stating that it has previously published investigations about members who had recently left office.

Report on Former Rep. Matt Gaetz to be Publicly Released

The House Ethics Committee is set to release a report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., following its investigation into alleged misconduct by him, according to sources familiar with the matter. The report may become public as soon as this week.

Gaetz was investigated by the committee for allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to illicit drug use, improper acceptance of gifts, and obstruction of the House inquiry. Gaetz, a Florida Republican, resigned from the House after President Donald Trump signaled his intention to appoint Gaetz as US attorney general.

However, Gaetz withdrew his candidacy shortly after the announcement, facing scrutiny and public revelations regarding his personal life. He denies all allegations.

The report details allegations of Gaetz paying for sex and having sexual relations with a minor. The House, however, earlier voted against a resolution that would have compelled the Ethics committee to reveal the report, sending the issue back to the committee.

Despite Gaetz’s close ties to Trump and potential gubernatorial bid in 2026, the release goes against House Speaker Mike Johnson’s stance of setting a “terrible precedent”. The Ethics Committee, typically, only has jurisdiction over current congress members, but it has previously released reports on recently departed members.

Gaetz was also previously probed by the Department of Justice over sex trafficking allegations, but the investigation ended without charges. In a recent post, Gaetz criticised the committee, reiterating his innocence, and acknowledged his past lifestyle choices.

Recently, Gaetz revealed he’d be joining the One America News Network or OAN as a weeknight anchor and podcast host starting the New Year.
