With the 2024 U.S. Senate primary just around the corner, candidates are actively campaigning in OHIO. U.S. Senator JD Vance just endorsed Bernie Moreno, both of whom recently participated in a New Albany town hall.

Quick Facts

  • Three GOP candidates are intensifying campaigns for the upcoming 2024 U.S. Senate election.
  • Senator JD Vance is a newcomer in politics.
  • Candidates are planning numerous grassroots events before the 2024 primary.

“The purpose of a town hall is to listen to the thoughts of the public,” said Bernie Moreno, who is one among three Republicans challenging Democrat Sherrod Brown for the Senate seat in 2024. Moreno, State Senator Matt Dolan, and Secretary of State Frank LaRose are after the Republican nomination.

Supporter Susan Platt praised Moreno, describing him as “the epitome of the American dream”, and highlighted his immigrant roots and success through hard work.

The town hall saw Moreno and Vance aligning on several policy objectives, including combating illicit drug sales, safeguarding the southern border, and implementing lower taxes. They both conveyed their opposition to sending more aid to Ukraine and their focus on domestic investment.

Vance claimed that Moreno’s values “most closely aligned with Republican voters” on issues such as border security and the prevention of unchecked foreign aid.

However, Political Science Professor Justin Buchler suggests that Vance’s endorsement isn’t a decisive factor for Ohioans’ choice in the 2024 primary. Buchler explained that endorsements are not as impactful for high-profile campaigns due to voters having direct information about candidates.

Despite Vance’s endorsement for Moreno, Buchler believes the other candidates still stand a fair chance. As the primary approaches, all contenders plan on hosting more grassroots events to rally support.
