John Bercow Uses Political Experience for Reality TV Show

Former House of Commons speaker, John Bercow, notorious for his combative reputation and confirmed as a “serial bully” and liar, is set to shake up reality TV with his political experience. Debuting on the US version of The Traitors, Bercow plans to utilise the skills he honed in politics for gameplay.

As a retired politician, Bercow joins a cast of celebrities, including Love Island winner Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, Tamra Judge from The Real Housewives of Orange County, and Marcus Jordan, Michael Jordan’s son. They will compete in the Scottish Highlands for a cash prize broadcast by BBC.

Bercow’s performance raised eyebrows during the season premiere when he experienced “breathing difficulties”, attributing it to asthma. This led fellow contestants to suspect him as a potential traitor, a role assigned to three contestants selected by host Alan Cumming.

“When you took your mask off, you said: ‘I have asthma’ but you just said: ‘I was asthmatic as a child,’” said Janelle Pierzina from Big Brother. Her suspicions echoed across the cast, with Bercow’s evasive replies hinting at his political background.

Despite not being designated as a traitor, several contestants voted Bercow, which further fuels the intrigue surrounding him. During his 10-year tenure as a Commons speaker, Bercow gained a cult following in the US and Europe for his distinct and commanding cries of “order, order” during Brexit debates and PMQs.

Controversial Exit from Politics

Bercow exited his role in the Commons in 2019. A subsequent independent inquiry in 2022 deemed him a “serial bully” and a liar, recommending a ban on his parliamentary pass. The inquiry upheld 21 out of 35 complaints against him filed by former staff, including accusations of phone throwing and verbal abuse. Bercow criticized the inquiry process, comparing it unfavorable to a kangaroo court.
