TL/DR –

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly prayed for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and sent him a painting after Trump was targeted in an assassination attempt, according to U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff. Witkoff, a real estate tycoon and friend of Trump’s, praised Putin’s willingness to communicate and dismissed criticism of Putin. However, Putin, who has been in power in Russia for 25 years, has been blamed for the deaths of multiple opposition leaders and accused of committing war crimes in Ukraine.

Russian Leader Putin Prays for Trump, Claims US Envoy

US special envoy Steve Witkoff revealed in an interview that Russian President Vladimir Putin prayed for ‘friend’ Donald Trump after an assassination attempt last year.

Speaking on Tucker Carlson’s podcast, Witkoff spoke highly of Putin’s openness to discuss the end of the Ukraine war and dismissed notions of Russia planning to attack European countries.

Witkoff, a real estate tycoon turned top diplomatic envoy, met Putin twice, during which Putin expressed concern about Trump’s assassination attempt. According to Witkoff, Putin prayed for Trump at his local church out of friendship.

Putin, during this same visit, gifted Trump a portrait painted by a Russian artist. Witkoff delivered the painting to Trump, highlighting it as a testament to their communication.

Addressing Criticism of Putin

Despite criticisms over Trump’s outreach to Putin, Witkoff emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving the Ukraine conflict. He added that although some perceive Putin as ‘a bad guy,’ he holds a different view and appreciated Putin’s straightforward communication.

Putin’s Record

Putin, a former KGB officer, has ruled Russia for 25 years and has been held responsible for the deaths of various Russian opposition leaders, including Alexei Navalny who died in Russian prison last year.

Claims on Ukraine Situation

Witkoff indicated that Putin blamed former President Joe Biden for the mishandling of the Ukraine conflict, considering his silence for three years as a mistake. He also added that the key to resolving the Ukraine issue lies in Russia’s claim to Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. However, he conceded that Ukraine’s acceptance to cede these territories remains uncertain.
