Former Fairfax County School Board Member Becomes County Supervisor

Rachna Sizemore Heizer, a former member of the Fairfax County School Board, was inaugurated as a county supervisor on Tuesday night, pledging to address concerns about affordability and restore trust in government.

In a ceremony attended by former school board colleagues and predecessors, Sizemore Heizer, the first Asian-American elected to the Board of Supervisors, addressed a crowded room. She emphasized the importance of representation, saying it confirms that everyone belongs and deserves to be heard.

After winning the Democratic primary, Sizemore Heizer defeated two other candidates for the seat, securing over 67% of the vote. The special election was organized following the election of former Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw to Congress.

Now, Sizemore Heizer will complete Walkinshaw’s term. In an interview post-ceremony, she pledged to demonstrate to residents that the local government can solve their everyday problems. She noted residents’ key concerns about affordability and emphasized the importance of advancing plans to renovate the Audrey Moore Recreation Center in Annandale.

She also discussed the necessity of preserving Lake Accotink and leveraging the artificial intelligence and cybersecurity industries to offset changes in the federal workforce. “We have to grow these industries to be known for innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Sizemore Heizer.

As the budget cycle for fiscal 2027 begins, she talks about avoiding past tensions between supervisors and school board members through improved communication. Sizemore Heizer, a college professor and parent of two Fairfax County Public Schools graduates, served one term on the school board and was elected to represent the Braddock District in 2023. A special election will be held to fill her now vacant school board seat.
