Sen. Cassidy’s Pro-Vaccine Stance May Cost Him in Louisiana Primary
TL/DR –
Senator Bill Cassidy’s credentials as a doctor and vaccination advocate are putting his political career at risk as he faces a challenging primary on Saturday. The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, which supports anti-vaccine activism and is backed by former President Donald Trump, has targeted Cassidy due to his conflict with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over his vaccine skepticism. Cassidy’s tensions with the MAHA movement have escalated over his perceived obstruction of the nomination of wellness influencer Dr. Casey Means, a close ally of Kennedy, as Surgeon General.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, known for his pro-vaccine stance, is facing a challenging Senate primary due to the rise of the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) movement.
Cassidy, R-La., is up against Trump-backed Rep. Julia Letlow as the Republican nominee for deep-red Louisiana.
Cassidy was key to confirming Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known anti-vaccine activist, as health and human services secretary. Since then, Cassidy has collided with Kennedy and his allies over his vaccine skepticism.
The tension between Cassidy and Kennedy’s MAHA movement has taken center stage ahead of the primary. Trump recently criticized Cassidy for obstructing the nomination of Dr. Casey Means, a wellness influencer and Kennedy ally, as surgeon general.
“Despite Senator Cassidy’s intransigence and political games, Casey will continue to fight for MAHA on the many important Health issues facing our Country,” Trump wrote on social media.
Kennedy also accused Cassidy of “sabotaging” Means’ appointment.
“Bill Cassidy once again did the dirty work for entrenched interests seeking to stall the MAHA movement,” wrote Kennedy on X.
Despite these criticisms, Cassidy argues that he has delivered more for Louisianans than Letlow or his other primary opponent, state Treasurer John Fleming.
Cassidy’s position as head of the Senate health committee has led him into repeated conflicts with Kennedy. He recently criticized Kennedy over his vaccine policy and interpreted a scientific study incorrectly.
On the topic of vaccines, Cassidy believes more voters may now side with him given the deadly impact of not getting vaccinated.
If Letlow triumphs in the primary, it will provide a significant boost to the MAHA movement’s influence in the midterms.
Letlow has embraced MAHA’s support and campaigned heavily on the MAHA movement in the final weeks of the campaign.
“I’m so excited about the great work that Secretary Kennedy and the MAHA movement are doing when it comes to nutrition,” said Letlow in a recent interview.
