Therapist Insights: Politics Becoming Major Issue in Relationships

57

TL/DR –

The therapist often assists couples with communication problems, infidelity, financial issues, loss of intimacy, emotional and physical abuse, differing life goals, and jealousy. Recently, they’ve observed that political differences are significantly impacting relationships, often to the point of breakups. They avoid engaging in political discussions within their practice to sidestep potential conflicts.

Common Relationship Problems Encountered by a Therapist

In my work as a therapist, I often help couples resolve complex issues in their relationships. Some problems I regularly encounter include:

  • Communication breakdowns
  • Cheating
  • Financial disagreements
  • Loss of intimacy
  • Emotional and physical abuse
  • Differing life goals
  • Jealousy

Recently, a new and challenging problem has emerged: political differences. The diverse and polarizing political climate is causing relationship breakdowns based on political alignments.

I generally avoid political discussions as I believe it’s important to keep my office neutral and prevent it from turning into a battleground. However, here are a few examples of politics influencing relationships:

  • An engagement ended because of differing political views.
  • A woman won’t sleep with her partner due to uncertainty about his voting preferences.
  • A physical fight between a father and daughter over a political hat led to a failed reunion.

Though these scenarios weren’t part of my training, they provide an interesting reflection of societal changes. Navigating this new issue has been a challenging but necessary part of my job.

Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the humorous memes on Facebook following the debates, as they provide some much-needed relief. I’ll have more fascinating anecdotes to share in my upcoming posts, including my past experiences working with prominent figures, so stay tuned!
