TL/DR –

Donald Trump cast himself as a key ally for gun owners and gun businesses at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting, where he received an endorsement. Trump suggested that under President Biden, the right to bear arms was under threat, and pledged to roll back every Biden attack on the Second Amendment should he be re-elected. The former president’s speech came as he faces trial in Manhattan on criminal charges and amidst rallies calling for stricter gun laws and a record number of deaths in mass shootings in the U.S. last year.

Donald Trump Advocates for Gun Rights Amid NRA Endorsement

Ex-President Donald J. Trump has portrayed himself as a staunch supporter of gun rights and businesses, warning that these rights are threatened under President Biden. “If the Biden regime gets four more years, they are coming for your guns,” he stated at the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) annual meeting in Dallas.

Mr. Trump is currently facing criminal charges for falsifying business records in Manhattan. Despite this, he has promised to combat any Biden administration attempts to limit the Second Amendment if re-elected.

NRA Struggles Amid Controversy

The NRA, traditionally a powerful advocate for gun rights, has recently faced numerous internal and external challenges, including setbacks, defections and lawsuits. A Manhattan jury ruled its leaders engaged in financial misconduct and corruption.

Despite these setbacks, NRA’s interim chief executive, Andrew Arulanandam, stated, “we are strong.” Texas Governor Greg Abbott also spoke at the conference, criticizing Biden and praising Trump for protecting Second Amendment rights.

Protests and Record Gun Violence

Public calls for stricter gun laws have grown amid increasing gun violence. According to The Associated Press, 217 people died in 42 mass shootings last year.

During the Dallas NRA meeting, Trump’s campaign named a couple who aimed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters as members of a Gun Owners for Trump coalition. This St. Louis couple had previously been pardoned after pleading guilty.

Trump’s Promises for Gun Rights and Previous Actions

Trump urged gun owners to vote and promised to reverse Biden’s firearm regulations. He declared, “with me in the White House, the radical gun-grabbers will run straight into a very, very powerful brick wall.”

Despite his promises, Trump’s presidency saw the implementation of a bump stock ban following the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. This ban is currently under Supreme Court review. Trump also pledged to enhance background checks following a 2018 mass shooting but later reversed his position.

Biden Administration’s Stance on Gun Control

Vice President Kamala Harris, leader of the first-ever federal office on gun violence prevention, highlighted the Biden administration’s efforts in gun safety legislation. She referred to recent measures limiting firearm access and the increased investment in mental health services. These measures concluded a 30-year impasse in Congress on addressing gun violence. Harris criticized Trump’s stance, noting his catering to the gun lobby could exacerbate the crisis if re-elected.
